Infestation of a Great Pyrenees
A five-year-old spayed female Great Pyrenees presented with profound lethargy. Blood work revealed severe anemia, with a packed cell volume of 8%. The dog was covered with all different stages of these organisms. What is this most likely to be?
This is Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick. Because this tick can infest kennels and homes, dogs may experience overwhelming infestations that result in anemia and even death due to exsanguination.
